There's a lot of trust between forum members as a member or many myself and people are always looking to learn from eachother.

Web forums offers many of the same benefits to your business as social networks. In fact, I kind of tend to think about forums as the original social networks. They've been around and have been helping people much longer than Facebook and twitter.

Forum participation can be a good way to garner links for your site but most online forums are very spam aware these days and if you start self promoting too much you will get banned and have your links removed. Why go to all that trouble for nothing in the end. Far better to purchase a package of high quality backlinks that will stay live forever and continue to bring you benefits.

I'm not really into forums, I still believe that social networking sites are more effective to promote businesses. Maybe because social networking sites like Facebook have more visitors everyday, meaning more prospects.

Forums are great. Whether you are in the internet marketing niche or another niche, there are probably forums that you can use to get some good information for content ideas.
Forums also let you get inside the mind of the average person in that niche, and you can become a part of their community. Over time you can become an expert in that field and be well known, and then of course you can sell to them.
